Question 1

What is engineering?

Accepted Answer

Engineering is the application of science, mathematics, and creative problem-solving to design and build systems, structures, machines, and technology that solve real-world problems. Engineering education typically involves a four-year undergraduate program (B.E. or B.Tech) after completing Class 12 with Mathematics and Science subjects.

Question 2

Which engineering course is right for me?

Accepted Answer

The right engineering course depends on your interests, academic strengths, and career goals. Consider what subjects you enjoy, whether you prefer working with computers, machines, buildings, or electronics, and what type of career environment interests you. Use our Course Finder tool to get personalised suggestions based on your profile.

Question 3

Can Tamil-medium students study engineering?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely. Tamil-medium students can pursue engineering. While engineering courses are taught in English, many students from Tamil-medium backgrounds successfully complete their engineering education. The key is to gradually build familiarity with technical English terms. Many colleges provide bridge courses and additional language support. Our Tamil-Medium Guide offers specific resources and strategies.

Question 4

What is TNEA counselling?

Accepted Answer

TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions) is the centralised admission process for undergraduate engineering courses in Tamil Nadu. It is conducted by Anna University and allocates seats in government, government-aided, and self-financing engineering colleges based on Class 12 marks. There is no separate entrance exam for TNEA; admission is based on a cutoff calculated from your HSC marks.

Question 5

How is the TNEA cutoff calculated?

Accepted Answer

The TNEA cutoff is calculated using your Class 12 (HSC) marks: Mathematics (100 marks) + Physics (50 marks) + Chemistry (50 marks) = Total Cutoff out of 200. The subjects carry different weightages, with Mathematics having the highest. The exact formula and weightages should be verified from the official TNEA website each year as rules may change.
